Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego said “U.S. Capitol police officers were sent to potentially be slaughtered” on Jan. 6 after a former White House staffer testified that former President Donald Trump knew protesters were armed and that there was insufficient security at the scene. the United States Capitol building.
“If it weren’t for this brave 25-year-old woman, we wouldn’t even know what was going on,” the Arizona legislature told reporters during the hearing on Thursday, citing Cassidy Hutchinson. “This is a very sad moment in our country right now.”
Gallego, a former United States Marine who instructed fellow lawmakers on how to don gas masks during the Capitol attack were among the many witnesses to the attack in the Cannon Caucus room who were shocked by the affidavit of the aide that day.

His comments came after Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified that Trump and his White House advisers had been informed that protesters on the National Mall were armed and headed to the United States Capitol on Jan. the United States, where lawmakers were formalizing the victory of Trump’s political opponent.
In a poignant testimony before the House of the House select committee on Jan. 6, Hutchinson testified that Meadows and Trump appeared indifferent to the armed and angry mob and that Trump “savage” that the crowd for his speech was not filled with people, which he attributed to metal detectors that would deter people with guns.
At one point she recalled Trump saying, “I don’t care if they have guns. They’re not here to hurt me. Get rid of the folding magazines. Let my people in; they can get to the Capitol from here.” march. Let the people in.”
During the same period, she also recalled that White House staffers were informed that there was not enough security on Capitol Hill to handle the hundreds of protesters who entered the building.
US Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell told Insider he felt betrayed after hearing Hutchinson tell of how Trump and his staff knew the Capitol Police was outnumbered and how Trump wanted to march with his supporters.
“Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn’t know, he still hasn’t done anything to help us,” he told Insider. “We wanted to lead the crowd according to the evidence released today.”
Gonell was one of several officers injured in the January 6 uprising while trying to prevent pro-Trump supporters from forcing their way into the US Capitol. An Army veteran who served in Iraq, Gonnell testified in 2021 before the same committee thought, as he struggled to breathe from the press of the public: “This is how I’m going to die.”
More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured during the uprising.
