Trump’s three Supreme Court appointees played a key role in the landmark decision.
Former President Donald Trump on Friday praised the Supreme Court for overturning a federal right to abortion, a conservative victory pushed over the top by his Supreme Court choices.
“This follows the Constitution and gives back rights when they should have been given long ago,” Trump told Fox News.
Trump reacted much more moderately than his former vice president, Mike Pence, who… celebrated the landmark ruling decades in the making† Pence also took the decision as an opportunity to call for a nationwide abortion ban, rather than letting each state decide what to do.
The couple’s differences aren’t surprising, as Pence has long discussed his deeply held Christian views, while Trump has admitted he was once a proponent of abortion rights. The differences underscore how two potentially leading 2024 presidential candidates respond to news that will be closely followed by Republican activists.
“God has made the decision,” Trump told Fox News after the Supreme Court ruling was delivered.
“I think in the end this is something that will work for everyone,” he added.
Privately, however, Trump has said that overthrowing Roe would be “bad for Republicans”. according to Maggie Haberman and Michael C. Bender of the New York Times.
Trump’s response shows how he’s tried to play both sides of the debate after making an explicit campaign promise that he would only name judges who would overthrow Roe v. Wade.
In 2020, Trump told “Fox & Friends” that it was “certainly possible” that then-judge Amy Comey Barrett would vote to overthrow Roe, but added:just don’t know what will happen.Barrett, the last of Trump’s pick, became the fifth and deciding vote in the overthrow of Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. She was joined by Judges Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s other two picks.
The court ruled 6-3 that Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy can stand. But Chief Justice John Roberts made it clear he disagreed with the decision to make a sweeping ruling that overturned the court’s precedents.
Later on Friday, Trump released a statement honoring the decision.
“Today’s decision, the biggest WIN for LIFE in a generation, along with other decisions announced recently, have only been made possible because I delivered everything as promised, including the nomination and confirmation of three highly respected and strong constitutionalists in the United States. Supreme Court of the United States,” he said.
He called it a “great honor,” while rebuking Democrats and the media for targeting “Republicans in name only,” who he said were “the true, but silent enemy of the people.”
